Dubdi
is one of the oldest monasteries in the state, established in 1701 by Chogyar
Namgyal. Dubdi meaning 'the
retreat', serves as an ideal place for monks seeking meditational
recluse. It is located near Yuksum on a hill top and one
has to travel by foot to reach it.
Enchey
monastery located in Gangtok is an important seat of the Nyingma order. This
200 year old Buddhist monastery is famous for Chaam, the religious masked
dance.
The ancient Pemayangtse
Gompa of Sikkim, located near Pelling, is devoted
to Nyingma Buddhism. The monastery has a collection of ancient Buddhist antique
idols, scriptures, sculptures of Rinpoches.
Sanga Chelling Monastery
was built in 1697 and is said to be
the oldest monastery in Sikkim. Sanga chelling literally means '
the island of esoteric teaching'. It is the sacred place of secret spells
and binds pilgrims with its beautiful murals. It is 7 kms away from Pemayangste.
Do Drul Chorten,
built under the legacy of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, has huge
statues of Guru Padamsambhava. Do Drul Chorten is the biggest and an important stupa
in Sikkim. It is encircled by Chorten Lhakhang and Guru Lhakhang and has 108
prayer wheels.
Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center
is the largest monastery in Sikkim and
is home to Tibetan monks. It is the seat of Kagyu order and is modelled
on the original Kagyu headquarters in Tibet. This sacred centre features some
of the world’s most unique religious scriptures and rare objects.
Lingdum Monastery located
in East Sikkim, is a popular among pilgrims as well as fine art lovers. Its
sacred architecture features exquisite murals, statues and adornments.
